Affirmation from a Supporter and Workshop Facilitator
It is good to hear feedback from people who have watched, over time, what happens in the Dignity House ministry. It can serve as a great reminder of ‘why we are doing what we do’. Here is one volunteer’s own words.
“I’ve known you for almost a year and a half, and have respected you and the work you do with the women of Dignity House. During that time, I’ve met a couple of the women, and you and I have talked about the work you do. Recently, I began to work with them in group, to hear them talk about many things, and to see you and them interacting together.
Seeing you with the women of Dignity House has given me a whole new – and heightened – respect for the work you do. Your work is more than delivering a program. You provide something that the women need more than even the best program. You offer love and acceptance. You provide hospitality in the sense that around you there is a space in which each woman may feel free to be who they are, without fear of judgment, or that they will lose you. That space is wherever you are, whether it is in the house, the van, at Overflow, or in the coffee shop. And around you all, community – healing community – is being spun like a precious silk.
It’s all about relationship, and for women who have known bad attachment as children, and physical and sexual trauma throughout their lives, it’s often hard to relate. Your presence and interaction with the women, I see more fully now, works to replace the negative experiences with new positive attachment, new hope, new learnings, new possibilities – all of which transcend “programs”. Your understanding of these women, graced by your own experience intermingled with the love of Jesus, is so important in your work together.
I wanted to say these words from my heart as an affirmation and encouragement for the challenging and valuable work you are doing. It’s a privilege to work with all of you. Thank you.”
